Elegy

Elegy, 36" x 36" X 5", steel, stone, bottle and cork, plywood, paint, 2020

Elegy recalls a woman who died very young, in the prime of her life. I did not realize this when I made it, but our relationship is chronicled in the surfaces, edges, materials, colors--everything. My work is often highly detailed and I control every detail. Little did I know as I drew, then constructed Elegy that it was so personal and accurate.

My works have now gone into the world. They are no longer mine. What I know of their origin, my intent, what I think now that they mean: all these are background. But Elegy, as with all artworks, belongs to everyone who engages fully with it.
